Postpartum Sacred Window

The sweet, challenging and fleeting 40 days after a women gives birth is referred to in Ayurveda as the Sacred Window. It is a potent and vulnerable time as the maiden metamorphoses into mother and the fetus into baby. This is a sacred transition, where parents often feel their heart bursting with more love than ever before. And where families may feel profound depletion and despair in a new world unknown. A womens’s body is in it’s fullness providing everything the baby needs to thrive on this new plane. If a woman is appropriately nourished and cared for in this time, she can heal deep seated imbalances and set the tone for her vitality for the rest of her life.

Women have been using the wisdom of food, herbs and touch to take care of each other for centuries during the postpartum window. Ayurveda is one of the ancient lineages that understands what a women needs on a physical, emotional and spiritual level at this sensitive time. We use food tailored to each woman to stoke her digestive fire, herbs and oils to support the nervous system and practices that help integrate the vast spectrum of emotional ups and downs that a mother is bound to go through.

I have gone through 2 postpartum windows myself and became a certified Ayurdoula through the Center for Sacred Window Studies. The teachings and recipes of ayurveda guided me in the challenging and ecstatic times of my postpartum windows. They have helped my whole family find resource and recovery when everyone has hit their limit. As an ayudoula, I am there for you with my medicine chest, with my listening heart, with my wholesome food, with my soothing touch, and with my skilled hands to help you come out of your sacred window more nourished, whole and in-love with your growing family.
