Herbal Cough Drops
Homemade cough drops to soothe a sore throat and cough.
These are simple to make and the only sugar used is the powdered sugar used to coat the outside. You can vary the herbs you use to treat a variety of symptoms. This recipe focuses on soothing a sore throat and cough. I used my Vitality Herbal Tea blend because it has slippery elm and licorice (among other herbs) to coat and heal a sore throat. I also included Osha Grove Tincture to ease a ragged cough. You can substitute these blends for herbs you have on hand.
Ingredients + Supplies:
1 c. Boiled Water
3 Tbsp Vitality Herbal Tea
1 Tbsp Osha Grove Tincture
3/4 C. Honey
2 C. Powdered Sugar
Small Sauce Pan
8 x 8 Pan (this is to hold the powdered sugar and to make molds; you could improvise with any pan or tray)
Thimble (you could also use your finger!)
Thermometer (this much reach up to 300 degrees fahrenheit)
Instructions:
Combine the boiled water with Vitality Herbal Tea, or any herbal blend you choose, and let sit for 20 mins.
Strain tea from herbs and add honey and Osha Grove Tincture. Boil till the mixture reaches 300 degrees fahrenheit. This will bubble significantly and it will burn if it goes over 300, so watch it carefully.
Remove from stove and let cool for about 15 minutes or until it is a syrupy consistency.
Prepare a homemade mold by spreading the powdered sugar into the tray until it is level. Press a thimble into the powdered sugar to make small circular molds.
Pour the mixture into the molds carefully and then let cool in a refrigerator. They will cool and be hard within an hour and are ready to use… let the healing begin!
