Salted Caramel Apples
An autumn tradition and celebration.
This recipe has been an anticipated part of my son’s birthday tradition since he turned two. I experimented on his 2nd birthday with making homemade caramel and ever since, my son and all our our community have looked forward to these dazzling treats. This recipes gets us outside climbing the wild apple trees along the creek and hunting for aspen stick to whittle into spears. It’s one of my favorite ways to celebrate autumn with my children here in the mountains.
Ingredients:
10 Lovely Apples
2 c. Sugar
16 tbsp. Butter
1 c. Heavy Cream
1 tsp. Salt
Instructions:
This caramel recipe will coat about 10 apples with a little extra to spare (which you will want to keep eating later!) Chill the apples in the refrigerator for a few hours before dipping into the caramel. This helps the caramel to set on the apple rather than dripping off onto the tray. We gather aspen stick in the forest and whittle the ends into little spears. This makes it easy. to sick into the top of the apples for dipping and eventually makes a great handle when eating later.
Making the Caramel
Step 1: Melt sugar in a medium sized pot on medium heat until it caramelizes, is bubbly and copper in color.
Step 2: Turn the heat to low and stir in butter, cream and salt until everything is incorporated and you have a delicious smelling caramel.
Step 3: Let the caramel cool off the stove for about 15 mins. Once the caramel is thickened, dip chilled apples into caramel. Immediately place the dipped apple back into the fridge and let set up for at least 1 hour before serving.
Step 4: Enjoy, share, devour and relish!
