Valentine Felting

A perfect needle felting project for beginners and children.

If you haven’t noticed yet… one of my favorite things to make is a garland. This valentine is a simple, beginners felting project that you can make into a garland!

First, collect roving wool in the colors of your choice. Roving wool is just the perfect kind of wool for needling felting. It has been cleaned, carted (brushed) and the fibers are all open and ready to be formed into your shape with your needle.

This project is excellent for beginners and children. My son, who is 5, loves to do needle felting. He often spearheads this project on his own and will pick out lots of other cookie cutter shapes to make as well.

Supplies you will need:

  1. Wool Roving: in the colors of your choice. In this example, I blended some of the colors together as I felted to make a marbled look.

  2. Heart Shaped Cookie Cutter

  3. Felting Needle

  4. Foam Pad (I would say this is optional, as I have just worked on top of our rug, I suppose you could end up felting into your rug which would not be good! If you are concerned, place a foam pad under your work.)

  5. Thread and Sewing Needle: for stringing the hearts together to make a garland at the end.

Steps to Create a Heart Garland:

  1. Felt the hearts using your roving wool, needle and cookie cutter. You can watch the video above to see how to felt the hearts.

  2. Thread a need with a thick string and string the hearts with some space between.

  3. Gift to a special someone or find a sweet place in your home to hang and enjoy!
