Autumn: Blood Moon

When morning frosts have turned to snow and no plants bear their fruits, the hunger turns to hunt. This is the Hunter’s Moon or Blood Moon when deer and elk are well nourished and prime for the kill.  Wood is stacked and the fires are stoked for roasting, smoking and storing. This blood was once an essential preservation and preparation for the icy cold days and nights ahead, the last harvest before the deep winter sets in and food becomes scarce. Perhaps we need this scarcity to find an ethical balance and reverence for the hunted.
